LMFAO is an American electro pop duo consisting of rappers, producers, dancers, and DJs Redfoo (Stefan Kendal Gordy, born September 3, 1975) and his nephew SkyBlu (Skyler Austen Gordy, born August 23, 1986). The group formed in 2006 in Los Angeles, California. RedFoo is also the son of music mogul Berry Gordy, and SkyBlu is his grandson. Their music incorporates a theme of partying and drinking, and the group commonly refers to their music style as “party rock”.
This year, the entire world is shuffling to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” So far, the unstoppable track from the Los Angeles-based duo has topped iTunes charts in seven countries, and spent weeks atop the English pop charts in April and May, when the duo kept artists such as Chris Brown and Jennifer Lopez from reaching the number one slot across the pond. As further testament to the global love for the song, the vibrant music video passed twenty million views on Vevo in under two months
LMFAO cites a vast range of different influences, such as rappers like Tupac Shakur, hip hop groups like The Black Eyed Peas, R&B artists like James Brown and Michael Jackson, and rock bands such as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Both are devoted fans of Michael Jackson and they use many of his dance steps in their dance routines. The Australian dance style the Melbourne Shuffle features heavily in the “Party Rock Anthem” videoclip, fused with US hip-hop dance elements. Also, LMFAO cites taking a huge inspiration from Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ AM, who first got them introduced to electronic music. Notably, RedFoo is a former brother-in-law of Jermaine Jackson, Michael Jackson’s older brother, and is also an uncle of Jermaine Jackson, Jr. In 2007, LMFAO attended the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida, which the duo says was an experience that inspired their musical and creative style.
