A1 Live in Malaysia 2001

A1 are a British-Norwegian boyband. They were originally made up of Mark Read, Ben Adams, Christian Ingebrigtsen and Paul Marazzi. Their first single, “Be the First to Believe”, entered the UK singles chart at #6 in early 1999. They had a huge amount of success worldwide and charts with two number #1s and eight top 10 hits.

Adding to this they also won a BRIT Award for “British Breakthrough Act” in 2001. They were formed by band manager Tim Byrne, who also formed Steps.

You should know the a1 story by now, but if you don’t – shame on you ! – here’s Mark with a little reminder: “Our managers spent nearly three years putting a1 together and they only chose one of us through an audition. I’ve worked with other bands and it’s so difficult to find four people with the same dedication and an equal amount of talent.” Adds Christian, “We’re open to all types of music, and we each bring in our own influences. Mark is Pop a1 – he loves Take That and Madonna, Ben is Soul a1 – he loves R&B and soul things like Michael Jackson and Babyface, Paul is Funk a1 – he loves Prince, Lenny Kravitz and George Michael, and I’m Rock a1 – I love Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and Bryan Adams.”

“We’ve got such big dreams and high ambitions for this group and as a songwriting team, we eventually want to be perceived like the BeeGees who write songs for everybody. When we’re so old that we can’t dance around anymore, we’ll still be writing songs for people.”

The biggest Disney fan since Walt, Mark has played the piano since he was two, toured with his mum and dad’s covers band all over the world and scooped a best newcomer award at an international song festival in Rumania when he was 15. Christian is the group’s musical boffin. Not only is he the son of a famous Norwegian pop star, but has studied music full-time at the Paul McCartney fame school (the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts), where he specialized in the voice, composition, and studio production.
